Maria Rodriguez The Adventurist

I used to think of Columbia mostly as the carefully planned place between Washington and Baltimore, where roads curve, neighborhoods hide behind trees, and Merriweather Post Pavilion gives everyone a reason to stay out past dinner. Then I started paying closer attention to what was happening around Lake Kittamaqundi and Merriweather District. The best restaurants in Columbia, Maryland, now include Sichuan cooking from a James Beard Award finalist, Japanese barbecue, expansive Indian menus, Greek seafood, Thai dishes, serious sushi, and enough wine to make the drive home somebody else’s responsibility. These are the best restaurants right now in Columbia, Maryland.

Clove n Cardamom Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Clove & Cardamom

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Clove & Cardamom treats Indian cooking as a starting point, not a fence. The current menu runs from butter chicken, lamb biryani, dal makhani, and tandoori kebabs to Bollywood fries, Indian flatbreads, and masala Alfredo. The last one sounds like international diplomacy conducted with cream sauce, and it works better than the description might suggest. Samosa chaat and tandoori wings make good opening moves, while the sizable vegetarian selection prevents meatless diners from receiving the usual consolation prize of mixed vegetables.

Best for: Indian standards alongside playful cross-cultural dishes

The Collective Offshore Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

The Collective Offshore

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

The Collective Offshore occupies the former Clyde’s waterfront property on Lake Kittamaqundi, a location with enough local history to make any replacement restaurant feel like an audition. The menu follows the East Coast from Maine through the Carolinas, with crab dip, oysters, seafood dishes, steaks, and cocktails among the principal attractions. A waterfront patio and the adjoining Encore entertainment venue broaden the appeal beyond dinner. Come for the view, but order as if the kitchen—not the lake—is expected to hold your attention.

Best for: Waterfront drinks, seafood, and live entertainment

Cured Table & Tap Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Cured / 18th & 21st

$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

These are two distinct restaurants sharing an address, ownership, and a talent for making dinner feel like an occasion. Cured is the more casual half, serving duck-fat fries, oysters Rockefeller, sandwiches, steaks, cocktails, and live music on Fridays. Behind another door, 18th & 21st operates as a supper club, pairing live jazz with dishes such as a Duroc pork chop, Maryland crab cake, rack of lamb, and rockfish with coconut-curry velouté. Choose according to how seriously you intend to take the evening.

Best for: Date night with dinner, cocktails, and live music

Dok Khao Thai Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Dok Khao Thai Eatery

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Dok Khao gives familiar Thai dishes a sharper wardrobe without draining them of character. Pad Thai, drunken noodles, and curries share the menu with street noodles, honey shrimp, Siam chicken, and a whole fried branzino dressed with spicy tamarind-chile sauce. There’s a dessert and drinks counter devoted to coffee, tea, bubble tea, and sweets, useful when you’re not quite ready to surrender. The stylish dining area makes this an easy choice for groups with uneven definitions of “casual.”

Best for: Thai food in a setting suited to dinner with friends

The Food Market Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

The Food Market

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Chef Chad Gauss built The Food Market around familiar food subjected to useful mischief. French onion rings borrow the broth and melted cheese of French onion soup, while Amish soft pretzels arrive with beer-cheese fondue. The rest of the menu moves among seafood, pasta, meat, vegetables, and indulgent snacks without insisting that one category behave more respectably than another. The Columbia location also serves café fare, weekday lunch, and weekend brunch, making it one of the more versatile dining options around Merriweather District.

Best for: Clever comfort food before or after a Merriweather show

Gyusan Japanese BBQ and Sushi Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Gyu San

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Gyu San splits its attention between all-you-can-eat Japanese barbecue and a substantial sushi and cooked-food menu. At the grill tables, diners cook hand-cut beef, pork, and seafood, with wagyu among the premium options. The Columbia location also places its 360-degree sushi bar front and center, while the menu extends to sashimi, special rolls, ramen, fried rice, karaage, salmon carpaccio, and other composed dishes. The photos are not disguising a steakhouse; this is a broad Japanese restaurant that happens to let diners handle some of the cooking.

Best for: Japanese barbecue with plenty for the sushi table

Iron Bridge Wine Co Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Iron Bridge Wine Company

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Iron Bridge Wine Company predates Columbia’s newer restaurant wave, but it remains one of the city’s better spots for dinner by matching a real wine program with food designed for it. The kitchen changes its menu seasonally, drawing on produce, seafood, and meats rather than locking itself to one cuisine. The wine list concentrates on small-production bottles, with a broad by-the-glass selection that encourages experimentation without requiring a full-bottle commitment. Staff guidance is part of the experience, particularly when the list begins to resemble assigned reading.

Best for: Wine drinkers who want dinner to keep pace

Peter Chang Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Peter Chang Columbia

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Peter Chang’s name carries unusual weight for a suburban restaurant: the chef was a 2016 James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic. His Columbia outpost backs up the résumé with scallion bubble pancakes, pork soup dumplings, dry-fried eggplant, mapo tofu, whole branzino, and roast duck. The menu draws heavily on Sichuan cooking, so chile heat is structural rather than decorative. Order across categories and share everything; concentrating an entire meal on one entrée misses much of what the kitchen does well.

Best for: Sichuan cooking from a James Beard Award finalist

Royal Taj Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Royal Taj

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Royal Taj applies considerable ceremony to dinner, from the attentive service to a menu long enough to require a strategy. Familiar choices such as tandoori chicken and lamb korma sit beside goat garam masala, Chilean sea bass with coconut-Malabar sauce, crab tikka masala, and lobster vindaloo. Vegetarian dishes receive enough space to constitute an actual dinner rather than an accommodation. This is the place for a leisurely meal with several people, particularly if everyone agrees to share. Anyone guarding a single curry is working against the architecture of the menu.

Best for: Celebratory Indian dinners with a large group

Smashing Grapes Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Smashing Grapes

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Wine is the organizing principle at Smashing Grapes, but the kitchen does more than provide something to place beside the glass. Seafood, house-made pasta, artisan pizzas, steaks, and shareable starters give the menu broad appeal. Lobster ravioli arrives with lobster meat and bisque, while the crab-and-artichoke dip combines jumbo lump crab with Asiago, Parmesan, and harissa. Wine dinners and live music appear regularly on the calendar, making the restaurant particularly handy when dinner needs a built-in second act.

Best for: Wine flights, live music, and an easygoing night out

Sushi Sono Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Sushi Sono

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Sushi Sono has occupied its Lake Kittamaqundi address for years, but longevity is not the same as stagnation. The restaurant continues to focus on traditional Japanese cooking, with sashimi, nigiri, maki, tempura, yakitori, and other cooked dishes. Fish and seafood take priority over novelty rolls engineered chiefly for structural drama. Tables overlooking the lake provide another reason to dine in rather than order takeout. It is a quieter, more traditional counterpoint to Columbia’s newer, louder restaurants—and one of the area’s most enduring choices for sushi.

Best for: Traditional sushi with a lake view

Xenia Greek Kouzina Columbia Maryland Best Restaurants

Xenia Greek Kouzina

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Xenia Greek Kouzina goes well beyond the standard procession of dips, skewers, and salad. The restaurant maintains a fresh-seafood display and builds much of its menu around whole fish, shellfish, grilled meats, and Greek preparations. Grilled octopus, lamb chops, spanakopita, grape leaves, and seafood pasta offer several ways into the menu, while the Greek wine selection rewards asking questions rather than automatically ordering something familiar. Finish with baklava, even if the table has just issued a unanimous statement about being full.

Best for: Greek seafood and a dressed-up dinner
