AUTHOR BIO: Jamie Dutton's job has her in airports regularly, as does a family spread out across the Midwest. She’s partial to BPTs and Bell’s.
In Peoria, a day of eating can begin with an egg on a maple pastry and end with dinner inside a working distillery. Between those two fairly sensible decisions, there is brisket in the old Rock Island Depot, mole in Junction City, and a patio lunch surrounded by Donovan Park. The Illinois River gives downtown its bearings, while nearby Peoria Heights adds a stretch of restaurants along Prospect Road, including a new supper club from the team behind Ardor. I like a dining scene that leaves room for both a bagel sandwich and an evening devoted to a bottle of wine, and the best restaurants in Peoria, Illinois, offer exactly that. Here are my 12 favorite restaurants in Peoria and neighboring Peoria Heights right now.
2Chez

At 2Chez, the sauces do much of the talking: rosemary demi-glace with duck breast, lobster cream around seared scallops, and a honey-Dijon-tarragon glaze on a double pork chop. Begin with lightly battered calamari and remoulade, then consider that duck with Lyonnaise potatoes or the Corsican, a seafood pasta with shrimp, scallop, and mussels. Family photographs help give the restaurant a personal feel, and the nightly specials add another decision to an already lengthy menu. This is a place for settling in over a bottle of wine.
Best for French-influenced classics
Ardor Breads & Provisions

A fried egg and cheddar on a maple kouign-amann seems like a perfectly reasonable way to begin a day in Peoria. That is the Krispy Kouign at chef Cody Scogin’s Ardor, where the riverfront bakery supplies sourdough, laminated pastries, and considerable temptation. Daytime dishes include a provisions board of cured and smoked meats, cheeses, and preserves; dinner brings cooking built around a wood-fired hearth and Midwest ingredients. Plan for a meal, then leave with a loaf. The bread is part of the reason to come.
Best for Pastries, sourdough, and a return trip for dinner
The Bar at Black Band

The distillery provides an impressive backdrop for dinner at Black Band, but there is plenty on the plate to keep your attention. The changing menu has included chèvre dumplings with kale, hen-of-the-woods mushrooms, and cultured cream, followed by steak frites with miso-chive butter or chicken rigatoni in the distillery’s own vodka sauce. Even the grilled cheese gets aged Gouda, fontina, Brie, and apple jam. Add a cocktail made with Black Band spirits, and dinner becomes a useful introduction to modern Peoria’s whiskey interests.
Best for Distillery cocktails with a proper dinner
The Blue Duck Barbecue Tavern

The old Rock Island Depot now handles a different sort of cargo: brisket, pulled pork, and wings that are smoked before they hit the fryer. Start with those wings or barbecue nachos, then choose a traditional meat plate or let the kitchen wander a little. Brisket turns up in tacos with Asian barbecue sauce and pickled onions, while poutine piles smoked meat, bacon, gravy, and cheese curds onto hand-cut fries. A full bar and the historic riverfront setting make the Blue Duck an easy place to linger.
Best for Smoked meats by the riverfront
BrightSide Kitchen

Chef Josh Lanning spent five years at SingleThread and later worked with Sean Brock before building BrightSide Kitchen in Peoria. Here, that background turns up in unusually thoughtful everyday food. Bright-O supplies hand-rolled bagels, including smoked trout with wasabi cream cheese, cucumber, and flying fish roe. BrightBird’s Curry Bird layers crispy chicken with Japanese curry glaze, a hash brown, and American cheese. For BrightBelly’s small-batch ramen, check the calendar for upcoming dinners and pickups. Breakfast or lunch is the easiest introduction to Lanning’s return home.
Best for Bagels and chicken sandwiches with a different point of view
Connected

Troy Ummel’s Connected gives a special-occasion dinner a fairly persuasive menu: homemade mozzarella to begin, cheese ravioli in tomato cream, and veal sautéed with morels, prosciutto, brandy, and Marsala. There’s a pepper-crusted wild boar tenderloin in a lemon-ginger sweet soy sauce, a departure from the Italian dishes around it. For a more familiar splurge, a filet mignon comes with Barolo sauce, mushrooms, and pearl onions. Book by phone, order something you would rarely cook at home, and give the night some time.
Best for An anniversary dinner with Italian classics and wild boar
Cyd’s in the Park

Donovan Park surrounds Cyd’s, with trees and open space beyond the patios. Upstairs, the full-service Grill serves lunch and dinner; downstairs, the Take Away Market handles breakfast, baked goods, and meals packed to go. At lunch in the Grill, begin with crunchy portobello mushrooms, then move to a ham-and-Brie sandwich with apricot-Dijon compote or a quinoa bowl with peanut-ginger dressing. Choose your service style, then let the park account for the rest of the afternoon.
Best for A patio lunch with a park attached
Hacienda El Mirador

At Hacienda El Mirador in Junction City, the menu gives you reasons to look beyond your usual order. Start with warm esquites dressed with chorizo, serrano chiles, and queso fresco, then turn to the family recipes: a cheese-filled chile relleno, skirt steak in ranchera sauce, or mole made with chocolate and finished with sesame seeds. The parrillada brings an extensive collection of grilled meats, shrimp, plantains, and sides, in versions for one or two. A margarita fits comfortably alongside all of it; choosing dinner may take a little longer.
Best for Mole, family recipes, and a substantial parrillada
One World

One World began as a coffee shop in 1993 and has grown into the sort of restaurant that can settle several competing dinner requests at once. Near Bradley University, it serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes throughout the day, with coffee and a full bar alongside them. The menu runs from a Cuban pulled-pork sandwich to burgers and pizza; vegetarians can choose falafel or an herbivorian wrap filled with vegetables and hummus or veggie cream cheese. Its separate vegan and gluten-sensitive guide helps narrow the choices. This is an especially useful address when everybody wants something different.
Best for An all-day meal for diners with different tastes
Saffron Social
$$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Saffron Social supplies downtown Peoria with an Art Deco setting and a menu suited to making an evening of it. Begin with beef carpaccio or lobster-and-mango ceviche, then consider the steaks, Maine diver scallops with cheesy cauliflower grits and corn-and-bacon succotash, or orecchiette Bolognese. Steak accompaniments include lobster saffron cream sauce and sautéed mushrooms, and the wine list offers plenty by the glass. It is an easy restaurant to choose for a celebration, particularly if your idea of one includes ordering a little beyond necessity.
Best for A downtown steak-and-seafood celebration
Sloane Supper & Social
$$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Warm brioche rolls with honey butter, a relish tray, and a brandy old fashioned give Sloane a strong supper-club start. Chef Cody Scogin’s Ardor Hospitality opened the restaurant in Peoria Heights, where the menu has featured beef braised in red wine and tomato over fresh rigatoni, whole rainbow trout with carrot mash and trout-roe beurre blanc, and a filet Oscar with crab and scallop-butter hollandaise. Sides include potato dauphinoise and buttered cabbage. For dessert, consider baked Alaska with lemon curd, vanilla ice cream, and meringue; upstairs, sister rooftop lounge the Fitz offers another way to extend the evening.
Best for A supper-club dinner in Peoria Heights
Untamed Chef
$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Chef Rebecca “Becca” Hearn gives Untamed Chef a menu with very little interest in restraint. Begin with bacon-jam bruschetta, then consider lobster mac and cheese or a chicken breast stuffed with mozzarella, tomato-basil pesto, and spinach. Lunch brings a hot lobster roll with white-wine garlic sauce and melted cheese, alongside substantial burgers and sandwiches. The open kitchen lets diners watch the cooking, and a full bar gives you a reason to stay. Hearn also offers cooking classes and private events for anyone who would rather participate.
Best for Lobster mac and cheese and a view of the kitchen
