Jamie Dutton The Adventurist

Iowa City built its national reputation on words, earning a UNESCO City of Literature designation and drawing generations of writers to the University of Iowa. These days, some of its best stories arrive on plates: Wisconsin trout at The Webster, tonkotsu broth prepared over three days at Paper Crane, and croissants behind the red door at DeLuxe, now a James Beard Award semifinalist. Many of the chefs behind these restaurants left Iowa, cooked in New York, Florence, Verona, and elsewhere, then came home with ideas that fit this compact college town. Iowa City’s dining scene has reached the point where the rest of the country has begun reading along. These are the best Iowa City restaurants right now.

Gianluca Baroncini’s career began in Verona, where he graduated from Italy’s national culinary institute and worked at Il Desco, a restaurant with two Michelin stars. He eventually landed in Iowa City and opened Baroncini in 2011, bringing the cooking of northern Italy to a narrow dining room on South Linn Street. His menu changes with the seasons, but expect handmade pastas, risotto, and dishes like beef carpaccio with capers and Parmigiano-Reggiano, followed by a properly boozy tiramisu.

Best for: Handmade pasta from a chef with Michelin experience

In 2008, Brady McDonald left Iowa City for Florence to work at a restaurant with a Michelin star. He came home and opened Basta with Jack Piper and James Adrian, creating an Italian restaurant where the kitchen makes the bread, pasta, mozzarella, ricotta, and desserts each day. The wood-fired pizzas emerge with blistered crusts, the burrata has traveled only a few feet from where it was made, and the house pastas give everyone a reason to order beyond the oven.

Best for: Wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta downtown

Bluebird Diner Iowa City Best Restaurants

Breakfast lasts all day at Bluebird Diner, which has occupied its corner of Market Street since 2008. The kitchen moves easily between familiar diner plates and stranger creations, including Bluebird huevos with smoked-pork green chile over griddled Parmesan polenta and the St. Blue, an egg foo yung sandwich with pulled pork, mushrooms, and red cabbage. Then there’s the cinnamon-roll French toast, made by placing one breakfast on top of another.

Best for: A full diner breakfast at any hour

Bread Worthy Bakery Iowa City Best Restaurants

Bread Worthy Bakery

Inside Bread Worthy’s new North Linn Street shop, the pastry case fills with croissants, pains au chocolat, tart-cherry hand pies, and naturally leavened loaves made with flour milled in-house. Owners Colleen Brennan and Erick Dole met at pastry school in Florence, then worked in kitchens and bakeries around the world before returning to Dole’s Iowa City hometown. They started Bread Worthy at the farmers market in 2021, and their chocolate tahini cake won the dessert category at Iowa City’s 2026 Top Chef event. In July, they moved into the old Goosetown space, giving all that laminated dough a permanent home.

Best for: Croissants and naturally leavened bread

The Dandy Lion Iowa City Best Restaurants

The Dandy Lion

The Dandy Lion looks out onto Iowa City’s Ped Mall from a storefront filled with green booths, old signs, and the glow of a proper luncheonette. The kitchen bakes its own sourdough and sends out breakfast plates like chicken biscuits, buttermilk pancakes, and salmon toast layered with chèvre, radishes, and poached eggs. The hash browns arrive with a deep brown crust, their edges broken into crisp little shards.

Best for: Breakfast with especially good hash browns

Deluxe Cakes & Pastries Iowa City Best Restaurants

DeLuxe Cakes & Pastries

Behind a bright red door in Iowa City’s Longfellow neighborhood, the pastry case at DeLuxe fills each morning with croissants, sticky buns, scones, and kouign-amann. Jamie Powers opened the bakery in a former neighborhood grocery in 2003, later adding breads, Sunday brunch, and celebration cakes decorated with the kind of detail that makes cutting into them feel briefly wrong. In 2026, the James Beard Foundation named DeLuxe a semifinalist for Outstanding Bakery.

Best for: French pastry, celebration cakes, and Sunday brunch

La Regia Taqueria Iowa City Best Restaurants

La Regia Taqueria

La Regia began as a taco truck before moving into a low-slung building on Highway 1 with a Mexican grocery attached. The tacos come on small corn tortillas scattered with onions and cilantro, leaving the focus on carnitas with crisp edges, spicy chorizo, lengua, or the soft, deeply flavored cabeza. Salsa arrives in shades that offer no reliable warning about what will happen next.

Best for: Lengua, cabeza, and carnitas tacos

Oasis Falafel Restaurant Iowa City Best Restaurants

Oasis Falafel

Naftaly Stramer and Ofer Sivan were eating lunch in downtown Iowa City when they began talking about the falafel they missed from home. They started with a food cart in 2004, using family recipes for falafel and hummus, then opened a small restaurant on North Linn Street that remains busy two decades later. Falafel comes out craggy and crisp, stuffed into pita with hummus and vegetables, alongside fries dusted heavily with seasoning.

Best for: Falafel, hummus, and a quick downtown lunch

Paper Crane Ramen and Cocktail Lounge Iowa City Best Restaurants

Paper Crane

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Edwin Lee began developing his ramen during a series of pop-ups at The Webster, where the bowls drew enough attention to become their own restaurant. At Paper Crane, broths and toppings take three days to prepare, producing tonkotsu shio with pork belly and aroma oil, negi shoyu with grilled chicken and scallion oil, and vegetable ramen built on daikon dashi. Next door, a dark cocktail lounge modeled after 1930s Japan allows dinner to continue after the final spoonful of broth.

Best for: Ramen and cocktails under the same roof

Pullman Bar & Diner Iowa City Best Restaurants

Pullman Bar & Diner

Pullman stretches through a long, skinny space on South Dubuque Street, with booths lining one wall and counter stools facing the open kitchen. The restaurant takes its name and much of its design from the dining cars of American railroads, while its menu rebuilds Midwestern diner food with ingredients from nearby farms. The Glazy Susan stacks eggs, bacon, gruyère, smoked-pepper aioli, and black-pepper maple on a brioche bun, putting most of breakfast between two halves of a bun.

Best for: Burgers, brunch, and a seat at the kitchen counter

St. Burch Tavern Iowa City Best Restaurants

St. Burch Tavern

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

The bear pictured throughout St. Burch Tavern is Burch, the University of Iowa’s first live mascot, brought to campus in 1908 and gone less than two years later after drowning in the Iowa River. His strange history hangs over an upstairs dining room serving fresh oysters, tuna crudo, steamed mussels, and steaks. Below it, the Den glows beneath a neon bear and serves cocktails until midnight.

Best for: Oysters, cocktails, and dinner near campus

The Webster Iowa City Best Restaurants

The Webster

Sam Gelman grew up in Iowa City, left for New York to cook at Momofuku Ssäm Bar and other restaurants, then returned home to open The Webster with his wife, Riene, in 2021. His menu follows the seasons across the Midwest, turning Wisconsin trout, duck-egg tagliatelle, morels, corn, and apples into dishes that earned the restaurant a place on The New York Times list of America’s 50 most exciting restaurants. At the four-seat chef’s counter, a curated multicourse dinner unfolds within a few feet of the stove.

Best for: Iowa City’s most ambitious dinner
