Lakewood Is One of America’s Great Kosher Dining Towns
The New Jersey township serves dry-aged steaks, serious sushi, dairy brunches, and tacos late into the night.

When work first started bringing me to Lakewood, New Jersey, I expected steakhouses. Everybody told me about the steakhouses: dry-aged beef, tableside flames, and tomahawks that overflowed platters.
But what surprised me was how far the Lakewood kosher restaurant scene stretches beyond them: dairy cafés serve fish, pizza, pasta, and sushi, while Mexican cooking, Chinese standards, and late-night fried chicken fill in the gaps. Nearby Jackson and Toms River have become part of the same dining orbit, so drawing a hard line at the township border would leave out some of the area’s most useful restaurants.
These are the 12 Lakewood-area restaurants that best show how the township became America’s unofficial kosher dining capital.
Bonsai

Bonsai gives the Lakewood area a kosher Chinese restaurant that reaches beyond the familiar sesame-chicken playbook. The kitchen handles standards such as beef with broccoli, lo mein, dumplings, and General Tso’s chicken, while a separate Japanese menu covers sushi, poke bowls, and clever sushi push pops. The Toms River dining room is stylish enough for a proper night out, but nobody will look askance if the table orders fried rice for the middle and proceeds to fight over it.
Best for: Chinese food with a serious sushi side quest
Bordeaux

The Brooklyn-born Bordeaux took over the former Seared space in 2025 and quickly established itself as one of Lakewood’s most convincing special-occasion restaurants. Chef Yudi Cirota combines steaks and sushi with starters such as duck confit gnocchi, crispy-rice beef tartare, bao buns filled with smoked duck, and short-rib tacos. A substantial wine program and actual cocktail bar help the evening feel celebratory before the beef arrives. Fortunately, the kitchen gives the night more than scenery.
Best for: Dates that call for steak and a proper cocktail
Cafotteria Modern Eatery

Cafotteria is counter service in theory, though the menu has considerably bigger ideas. Breakfast brings omelets, tartines, salads, and house-cured salmon; later hours introduce pizzas, pastas, wraps, and fish dishes. That range makes the dairy restaurant useful from morning coffee through dinner, while the playful presentations keep it from reading like a catchall café. A robot may even help deliver the food, which is either the future of hospitality or an excellent way to persuade children to finish brunch.
Best for: Brunch when everyone wants something different
Carve Bistro

One of Lakewood’s newest arrivals, Carve Bistro opened in June 2026 with steaks, fish, cocktails, and a more casual posture than its name might suggest. The restaurant works for family dinners and date nights alike, occupying the useful middle ground between counter service and the full steakhouse production. Its arrival also adds another contemporary meat restaurant to River Avenue, a stretch where diners are not suffering from a shortage of dinner options—or large cuts of beef.
Best for: Trying one of Lakewood’s newest dining rooms
CharQ

CharQ occupies the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, where the windows and patio supply something unusually scarce in Lakewood dining: a view. The kitchen matches the setting with house charcuterie, sushi, burgers, and USDA Prime steaks, including flaming wet- and dry-aged tomahawks built for tables that enjoy dinner with a minor pyrotechnics budget. Smaller cuts come with confit potato, roasted garlic, shishito peppers, and red-wine reduction. Arrive before sunset when the weather cooperates; the golf course handles much of the decorating.
Best for: Steak with a sunset view
Entrée

Entrée understands that fine dining depends as much on how dinner moves as what lands on the plate. The Lakewood restaurant builds the experience around attentive service, a handsome setting, meat-focused cooking, and the sense that nobody is trying to turn the table before dessert. That makes it particularly useful for business dinners and celebrations, when conversation matters as much as the food. Lakewood has no shortage of steakhouses, but Entrée remains one of its most dependable choices for a measured, grown-up evening.
Best for: A business dinner that should still feel like dinner
Estreia
$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Estreia returned from an eight-month renovation in 2025 with a refreshed dining room and its identity intact: this is a special-occasion steakhouse willing to change with the seasons. Executive chef Ezra Lejbik oversees a menu that moves from hummus platters topped with shawarma, ground beef, or ribeye into starters, salads, fish, poultry, and substantial cuts of beef. Wines, beer, mixed drinks, and an on-staff sommelier complete the production. Estreia has survived Lakewood’s steakhouse boom because it still understands why people dress up for dinner.
Best for: Anniversaries, birthdays, and opening the good bottle
Flysh

This South Lakewood counter-service restaurant piles meat and chicken into overloaded combinations, with Buffalo poppers, the signature Lakewooder sandwich, and fried Oreos among its recurring favorites. It is casual, open late Sunday through Thursday, and delivers throughout Lakewood, Jackson, and Toms River. Not every meal needs a sommelier; sometimes it needs crispy schnitzel and hot pastrami on the same sandwich.
Best for: Late-night sandwiches with no interest in restraint
Kalamata Café

Kalamata Café sits just over the Lakewood line in Jackson, serving a dairy menu that treats Italian food as a starting point rather than a restriction. Pizza shares space with brunch, salads, pastas, eggplant Parmesan, pan-seared fish, and a substantial sushi selection. The combination sounds unwieldy, yet it makes Kalamata especially useful for groups divided between pizza, salmon, and raw fish. The relaxed dining room also makes it possible to bring children without turning dinner into an endurance sport.
Best for: Groups split between pizza, fish, and sushi
Pescada
$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Pescada in Jackson approaches dairy dining on a much grander scale than the average neighborhood pizza shop. The kitchen combines Italian cooking and pizza with sushi, carefully prepared fish, espresso drinks, desserts, and a full bar. A raised sushi counter, private-event facilities, and outdoor seating give it enough flexibility for dinner for two or a considerably louder family gathering. The range is broad, but the setting signals that Pescada wants to be treated as a night out rather than merely a place to solve dinner.
Best for: A celebration where pizza alone will not do
Taquito
$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
This kosher Mexican restaurant concentrates on tacos, burritos, bowls, and chicharron pollo, using salsas, vegetables, and properly seasoned meat to do the work. Yes, you can build your own burritos and bowls, but the kitchen’s combinations are worth trusting. Mexican sodas and seltzers complete the experience, while late hours make Taquito particularly valuable.
Best for: Late-night tacos without ersatz cheese
Tomahawk Steakhouse
$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Tomahawk embraces the contemporary kosher steakhouse with admirable enthusiasm. The current menu runs from beef-cheek hummus, duck dumplings, lamb tortellini, and short-rib gnocchi to carpaccio, sushi, steaks, and imposing meat boards. Beef remains the obvious destination, but the appetizers are far too interesting to treat as opening formalities. The sleek dining room and bar make it a natural celebration restaurant, while the abundance of shareable dishes rewards bringing enough people to order recklessly and still call it sensible.
Best for: A celebratory dinner with too many appetizers
