Maria Rodriguez The Adventurist

I make the trip from New York to Trenton almost every week for work, often enough that parts of the city now seem more familiar than my own neighborhood. I know which exit will betray me, where parking becomes a matter of optimism, and how long I can linger over lunch before traffic turns the trip home into a punishment.

Somewhere along the way, I also became a person who gives restaurant advice in the halls of the New Jersey State House like I have lived in Trenton my whole life. The city makes that part easy. Trenton’s best restaurants reflect the communities that built the capital, with Polish pierogies, Jamaican oxtails, Guatemalan breakfasts, Dominican mofongo, and soul food spread across the city.

After enough drives, lunches, and unsolicited recommendations beside offices where considerably more important decisions are being made, these are the best restaurants in Trenton I send people to first.

Blue Danube Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Margaret and Peter Pulhac bought the restaurant that became Blue Danube in the 1980s, after escaping communist Romania and eventually settling in Trenton. Their menu follows the river through Eastern Europe: Hungarian chicken paprikas, German schnitzel, Romanian mititei, and Polish pierogies. The Danube sampler puts those little sausages beside stuffed cabbage, pierogies, and noodles fried with cabbage. It is listed as an appetizer for two, though it could comfortably end the discussion about dinner.

Best for: An old-school Eastern European feast

El Rancho Taqueria and Bar Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

El Rancho stays open until 2 a.m. on weekends, though its menu is worth approaching well before the bars empty. The kitchen moves between Mexico and Guatemala, serving birria tacos, pupusas, Guatemalan breakfasts, seafood soups, and platters of grilled meat. Fried whole fish arrives with rice, salad, and warm tortillas, while the bar sends out margaritas in several colors. Start with pupusas and decide how ambitious to get from there.

Best for: Pupusas and late-night tacos

Gyro Express Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Gyro Express

Gyro Express sits a few steps from the New Jersey State House, making it a reliable answer when lunch must fit between meetings. Lamb and chicken are shaved into gyros or spread across rice platters with salad, pita, and white sauce. There are falafel, kofta, and chicken kebabs too, though the mixed platter handles indecision particularly well. Everything is halal, portions are generous, and nobody needs to spend the afternoon debating a reservation.

Best for: A quick lunch near the State House

The Hummingbird Restaurant Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

The Hummingbird Restaurant

The scent of jerk seasoning often reaches South Warren Street before the front door of The Hummingbird opens. Inside, the Jamaican menu centers on jerk and curry chicken, oxtails, stewed chicken, red snapper, and salmon. Dinners come with choices like rice and peas, cabbage, plantains, and macaroni and cheese. The oxtails cost nearly twice as much as the chicken, a problem familiar to anyone who has ordered oxtails lately.

Best for: Jerk chicken and oxtails downtown

Ila Mae's Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Ila Mae’s Restaurant

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Ila Mae’s begins the day with cheese grits, omelets, chicken and waffles, and thick slices of French toast, including one stuffed with bananas. Later, the kitchen turns to fried fish, turkey wings, beef ribs, lamb chops, and pepper steak, with macaroni and cheese, candied yams, and collards on the side. The crab-cake breakfast comes with eggs and buttery grits, removing any need to think about lunch.

Best for: A breakfast that carries well into the afternoon

Magic Latin Restaurant Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants steak

Magic Restaurant

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Magic serves Latin American cooking from a dining room on South Broad Street that looks ready for both brunch and somebody’s birthday. The menu travels widely: Ecuadorian shrimp ceviche, Peruvian lomo saltado, Colombian la paisita, Honduran pollo con tajadas, and a seafood soup carrying mussels, shrimp, tilapia, and snow crab legs. Breakfast runs all day, should the afternoon call for eggs, beans, fried plantains, and fresh cheese. Trenton’s Eat Local Club named it the city’s favorite dinner restaurant in 2025.

Best for: Latin American cooking with plenty of passports

Skil-Lit Cafe Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Breakfast arrives on hot cast-iron pans at Skil-Lit, a small downtown cafe where many of the dishes carry some variation of “lit” in the name. The Grit-Lit matches cheese grits and eggs with Cajun shrimp or fried whiting. The Surf & Turf piles steak, shrimp, peppers, onions, eggs, and loaded potatoes into one skillet. Even the avocado toast can be topped with crab or shrimp. Trenton was unlikely to leave it alone.

Best for: Breakfast served sizzling

Tikal Restaurant & Lounge Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Tikal Restaurant & Lounge

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Tikal stays open until nearly 2 a.m., serving the foods of Guatemala and its Central American neighbors from a big corner space in Chambersburg. Pollo con tajadas comes with fried green plantains and cabbage salad. Seafood might mean a whole fried mojarra, garlicky tilapia, or salmon and shrimp in white sauce. There are also tacos, steaks, soups, and a full bar, because nobody studying the menu after midnight should have to make a quick decision.

Best for: Guatemalan food long after dinner hour

Timbi Latin Experience Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Timbí Latin Experience

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Timbí opened in Mill Hill with a Dominican menu built around pork treated with considerable care. Its chicharrón is roasted rather than fried, leaving the outside crisp and the meat beneath it juicy. Order it with mofongo, or choose one filled with shrimp or carne frita; trifongo adds yuca and sweet plantains to the usual mashed green plantains. The Dominican chimi burger supplies a messier route through the menu, which is not a complaint.

Best for: Oven-roasted chicharrón and mofongo

Tracey's Kitchen Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Tracey’s Kitchen

Trachele Johnson began cooking African food at home for her mother and sister before her following grew large enough to require a restaurant. At Tracey’s Kitchen, cassava leaves and spinach greens are cooked with chicken or shrimp, then served beside the soul-food dishes that came later: fried fish, turkey wings, macaroni and cheese, and candied yams. The Everything Platter combines both sides of the menu, which is exactly what its name promises.

Best for: African greens with Southern sides

Tradiciones Caesar's Italian Restaurant Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Tradiciones by Caesar’s

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

The former Caesar’s Italian Restaurant returned as Tradiciones, trading much of the old menu for Latin cooking built around grilled meats and seafood. Whole fish, shrimp, steaks, and pollo con tajadas fill the tables, and a buffet runs during parts of the week. The dining room is also used for weddings, birthdays, and graduation parties. On the right evening, dinner comes with music and somebody else’s family celebrating nearby.

Best for: Seafood and a big family gathering

Trenton Social Trenton New Jersey Best Restaurants

Trenton Social

$$ | MAP | INSTAGRAM

Trenton Social sits across from the arena with a granite bar, a reserve wine list, and a schedule that tends to grow louder as dinner gives way to live music. The menu applies a few twists to American bar food: cheesesteak egg rolls, Asian barbecue wings, blackened salmon, and a filet mignon sandwich. It has been part of the city’s nightlife for about 15 years, which in restaurant time is long enough to have watched several neighboring concepts come and go.

Best for: Dinner and drinks before the music starts
