Eric Barton The Adventurist

Asheville’s best restaurants have their own list, filled with tasting menus, James Beard nominees, and checks that occasionally require a quiet moment. This one is about the places where you order at the counter, find your own table, and still end up with some of the tastiest food in the city. The folks are friendly, the meals are excellent, and dinner won’t require canceling Saturday’s rafting trip to rebalance the weekend budget. Here’s where to eat well for less in Asheville.

Baby Bull Asheville North Carolina Best Affordable Restaurants

Baby Bull

There’s a satisfying lack of ceremony at Baby Bull, the counter-service burger shop from the Bull and Beggar team. The double cheeseburger comes with caramelized onions, bread-and-butter pickles, American cheese, and Duke’s mayonnaise, its edges crisp and its juices running into the bun. The menu has expanded since the early days of burgers-only, now including a fried fish sandwich, lobster roll, roast pork hoagie, french dip, and a vada pav, and honestly you’d be right to order any single thing.

Best for: Asheville’s finest cheeseburger

Birdie's Pizza Asheville North Carolina Best Affordable Restaurants

Birdie’s Pizza

Culinary Institute of America graduates Justin and Chrissy Balzer spent five years testing Birdie’s dough after working more than a decade at Postero. Named for their daughter Wren, the shop uses North Carolina organic flour and a 10-year-old sourdough starter for 20-inch New York rounds and airy Sicilian squares. The meatballs follow Chrissy’s family recipe, and the hot pepper salad comes from her mother, giving this downtown pizzeria considerable history.

Best for: A slice between downtown stops

Botiwalla Asheville Best Affordable Restaurants

After moving Chai Pani to a bigger spot on the South Slope, Meherwan Irani left behind a more casual counter-service concept that also has a second location in West Asheville. Chicken tikka, malai chicken, lamb seekh kebab, and paneer come wrapped in hot buttered naan or laid across basmati rice cooked with biryani spices. There are okra fries with chaat masala and crispy Gobi 65 cauliflower, proof once again that vegetables improve considerably after a visit to the fryer.

Best for: Indian street food and a pile of okra fries

Flour Asheville North Carolina Best Affordable Restaurants

Flour

Flour outgrew its food hall stall and took over a downtown restaurant space that’s full of sunlight, with a patio that spills out on walkable Wall Street. I don’t think it’s humanly possible to find fault in their biscuits; they’re big square numbers with crispy tops, and soft centers. Those biscuits are a pretty perfect home for breakfast sandwiches, with eggs, lots of cheese, occasionally broccolini, and best done with very smoky bacon. The composed dishes show this is far more than just a sandwich concept, including a dish of red beans with avocado and pickled veg that feels very much like a breakfast that should be had on a daily basis. If all that sounds like too much, there’s a potato chip and chocolate chip cookie, or just those biscuits with whipped butter and jam.

Best for: Biscuits, breakfast, and coffee downtown

Paperhouse Pizza Asheville Best Affordable Restaurants

Paperhouse Pizza

A friend recently gave me a hard time for calling Paperhouse’s crust “unimpeachable,” because apparently that’s an odd way to refer to a pizza pie. But I’ll stand by that review of the most perfectly slow-fermented, blistered, and charred sourdough pizzas put out by this roving food truck. Check their Insta for where they’re headed this week, but expect them Wednesdays at New Belgium and Fridays at Diatribe. Toppings change with the season (here’s hoping you catch them when ramps are ready), but the margherita with burrata is, you guessed it, absolutely unimpeachable.

Best for: Sourdough pizza with blistered edges

Pon's Red Curry Asheville North Carolina Best Affordable Restaurants

Pon’s Thai Cuisine

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Pon’s sits inside a Citgo station in South Asheville, where the gas pumps offer few clues about the curries simmering beyond them. The menu includes pad see ew, drunken noodles, fried rice, and Thai barbecue chicken with sticky rice, plus red, green, yellow, panang, and massaman curries. Pon’s works mainly as a takeout operation, sending people back across the parking lot with paper bags considerably more aromatic than anything sold beside the register.

Best for: Thai takeout at a gas station

Pupuseria Paty Asheville North Carolina Best Affordable Restaurants

Pupusería Patty

Thick corn cakes arrive hot from the griddle, filled with cheese, beans, pork, chicken, loroco, shrimp, or some combination of the above. Pull one apart, add curtido and tomato salsa, and the whole thing becomes a mash of textures, the crispy-edged bits, the tender insides, the crunch of pickled cabbage. The menu reaches across Salvadoran, Honduran, and Mexican cooking, including fried plantains, breakfast plates, tacos, and enchiladas, but the pupusas are a big reason you’re eating at a place that shares a parking lot with a gas station.

Best for: Pupusas and big plates for not a lot of money

Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack Asheville

Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Rocky’s lets customers select their heat level, a decision that grows more consequential with every step up the menu. The fried or baked chicken comes by the piece, on a platter, or inside a sandwich, with a crust that remains crisp beneath its dark red coating. Mac and cheese, collard greens, mashed potatoes, and corn pudding can calm things down, at least until the next bite starts the trouble again.

Best for: Hot chicken at precisely your pain threshold

Mamacita's Taco Temple Asheville North Carolina Best Affordable Restaurants

Taco Temple

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Taco Temple presses its corn tortillas in-house, then fills them with carnitas, fish, chicken, mushrooms, and whatever else the kitchen has planned. Before noon, the menu shifts to breakfast tacos layered with eggs, potatoes, bacon, chorizo, avocado, or combinations that generally require two hands. There’s a drive-through, but eating in the charming former filling station is part of the draw, especially when it’s $5 margs on Mondays.

Best for: Breakfast tacos without leaving the car

White Duck Taco Shop Asheville Affordable Restaurants

White Duck Taco Shop

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

White Duck Taco Shop began in Asheville and built its following by treating the tortilla as an open invitation. The menu skips easily across borders with Bangkok shrimp, Korean beef bulgogi, Thai peanut chicken, crispy pork belly, and fish tacos. Order them one at a time, add green chile black beans or chips and queso, and assemble a meal that makes no particular geographic sense while tasting as though it does.

Best for: Tacos with an overstuffed passport

White Labs Pizza Brewpub Asheville North Carolina Best Affordable Restaurants

White Labs Brewing Co.

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

White Labs began as a company that supplies yeast to breweries and then applied that same science to a pizza-powered brewpub. Dough ferments for 72 hours with liquid yeast before hitting an 800-degree wood-fired oven, emerging blistered and lightly chewy. The pies include margherita, pepperoni, and the Hot Hog with Italian sausage, hot cherry peppers, and honey. Beer flights compare identical recipes fermented with different strains, a laboratory experiment that arrives in tasting glasses.

Best for: Pizza and a fermentation lesson

Taqueria Xico Chico Asheville

Xico Chico

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Xico Chico begins at a purple-and-yellow door below Xico on the South Slope. Ring the bell, and chef Scott Linquist’s crew passes out two-taco baskets through the window: carne asada carrying smoke from the charcoal oven, pastor shaved from the trompo, or roasted mushrooms with huitlacoche and crispy cheese. The 25-seat patio is ready for made-to-order guacamole, margaritas, and cajeta-filled churros, assuming those survive the walk from the window.

Best for: Tacos served through a downstairs window
