Back in the ‘90s when I went to college in Lakeland, you could start counting the decent restaurants on one hand and finish before you used all your fingers. Those days are long gone. These days there’s Japanese small plates at Hakucho, pastries and lunches at Bandidas, and Asian American cooking served overlooking the airport runway. During my countless trips back to Lakeland over the years, I’ve been keeping track of what’s new, adding the new gems to my tried-and-true list of Lakeland’s Best restaurants. These are the 12 best restaurants in Lakeland that you should book tonight.
Bandidas Bake Shop

Gabriella and Giovanna Favilli-Vigoreaux worked in New York kitchens before opening their bake shop on Edgewood Drive, bringing Puerto Rican and Nicaraguan family roots to this stretch of Lakeland. Their sandwiches come on homemade focaccia, with serrano ham, manchego, and fig butter in the Jamon Jamon, or cheddar, kimchi, and gochujang mayo in Gigi’s Toastie. Guava pastelito mini cakes share the pastry menu with hippie scones and peanut butter miso cookies. There’s a small market, too, for taking a little of the shop home after the plates have been cleared.
Best for Empanadas, focaccia sandwiches, and guava pastries
Born & Bread Bakehouse

Jenn Smurr’s bakehouse turns out croissants, sourdough loaves, and cruffins, those improbable-looking pastries made by baking croissant dough in a muffin shape. The dough climbs up and over the edges, leaving plenty of browned layers to pull apart before reaching the filling. Biscuits and breakfast sandwiches offer something more substantial, although a pastry and coffee are a perfectly reasonable way to begin a morning on South Florida Avenue.
Best for Cruffins and a Dixieland breakfast
Cafe 51

At this cafe south of town, a dish called Nancy’s bacon noodles tells you something about the people running it. Siblings Tom LaBarbera and Kathy Billings named it for their mother, whose recipe combines bacon, onion, garlic, and red sauce. Their St. Louis upbringing shows up elsewhere, in toasted ravioli and a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. Even the signature chicken gets a coating of breading before it goes on a skewer over the grill.
Best for Toasted ravioli and Nancy’s bacon noodles
Curry Leaves Indian Cuisine

From a Best Western on U.S. 98, Curry Leaves serves chicken in roasted coconut curry and lamb chops marinated with ginger. Owner Saji Mathew and chef Krish Unny come from Kerala on India’s southwestern coast, and their cooking has made its way to Lakeland by way of a Tampa restaurant. Order garlic naan for dragging through the sauces, or come for the weekend lunch buffet and fill a plate from several pots.
Best for Roasted coconut curry and the weekend buffet
Folds Pizza

Lake Mirror spreads out beside The Joinery, the food hall on Main Street where Folds sells pies. A margherita comes with fresh mozzarella, pecorino, basil, and red sauce; the cacio e pepe borrows its name and cheese-and-pepper combination from the Roman pasta. Carry one outside to a table facing the water. The promenade curves around the lake beyond, providing somewhere to walk once you’ve fought over the last slice.
Best for Pizza beside Lake Mirror
Grievous Angel

Jeremy and Leah Brumley, the couple behind LoveBird, turn their attention from fried chicken to smashburgers at Grievous Angel. The namesake burger pairs American cheese and caramelized onions with pickled jalapeños, giving all that richness a little heat. Somewhere in Texas goes further, with white cheddar, pecan-smoked bacon, ranch slaw, and bourbon black pepper barbecue sauce competing for space inside the bun. Order a cocktail and claim an outdoor table; Lake Mirror is nearby if walking off those burgers sounds like a good idea.
Best for Smashburgers at the former Poor Porker
Hakucho

Dinner at Ryan Neal’s Main Street izakaya can start with blistered shishito peppers, sprinkled with yuzu salt and served with lemon. From there, the menu moves to pork dumplings in tom kha broth, chili crisp floating among the herbs, and skewers of chicken thigh, pork belly, or prawns. Bowls of ramen can anchor the meal. Or keep ordering small plates, letting the table fill up a little at a time.
Best for Dumplings, skewers, and Japanese small plates
LoveBird Almost Famous Chicken

The Big Velvet is a substantial introduction to LoveBird: two chicken tenders on challah, layered with smoked gouda, bacon, chipotle honey mustard, and hot honey. At the South Florida Avenue location, Nashville-style chicken also comes in quarters, with a choice of heat levels. The sides follow through on the Southern theme, from collards cooked with smoked ham and bacon to jalapeño-bacon corn and mac and cheese topped with Parmesan crunch.

Across Main Street from Munn Park, Marcos Fernandez serves ropa vieja with braised short rib, the shredded meat cooked with tomatoes, peppers, onions, and olives. It comes with manchego risotto and sweet plantains, a Cuban dish taken in a direction of his own. Start with corvina ceviche, bright with lime and cilantro, then settle in for dinner at a white-clothed table. The rooftop bar puts downtown below you for a drink afterward.
Best for Short-rib ropa vieja and a rooftop drink
The Peach House

An old house near Lake Morton, painted pink inside and furnished with a porch, is the setting for mussels in coconut jerk cream and deviled eggs topped with trout roe. The Peach House’s menu draws from the Gulf and the Caribbean, putting grilled grouper in a sandwich with cilantro slaw, peach salsa, and lime crema. For dessert, key lime pie gets a brûléed top, a layer of sugar to crack through before reaching the tart filling.
Best for Grouper, mussels, and brûléed key lime pie
Sora Eatery
$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Sora looks out over the runway at Lakeland’s airport, providing lunchtime entertainment as you eat a burger covered in miso-butter mushrooms and onions. Bulgogi ribeye splays out over crisp fried rice with an egg on top. Chicken potstickers get their bite from kimchi. The restaurant is open to the public, and diners can ask for parking validation for up to four hours, making this an airport lunch that requires no departure afterward.
Best for Bulgogi bowls with a runway view
Vegetation Cafe & Kitchen
$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
At Vegetation on Gary Road, lunch comes with the option of solving dinner, too. The vegan cafe keeps prepared food in a refrigerated case to carry home, alongside meals to eat there. Recent menus have included nachos with soy chorizo and cashew cheese, bowls of sriracha tofu over quinoa, and sandwiches of barbecued soy curls piled with pickles and slaw. Add coffee with plant milk and a pastry, then take a look in the case before heading back out.
Best for A vegan lunch and something for the fridge
