The Family Behind a Baltimore Crab Cake Institution Has a New Restaurant

The Fishmonger’s Daughter turns a century-old Maryland seafood legacy into a Catonsville restaurant.

A family responsible for one of Baltimore’s most famous crab cakes now has a full-service seafood restaurant in Catonsville.

The Fishmonger’s Daughter comes from Damye Hahn, a fourth-generation member of the Faidley family, whose Faidley’s Seafood has operated at Lexington Market since 1886. Hahn is running the restaurant with her son, Will Hahn, giving the business a next-generation branch outside the market counter that made the family name.

The restaurant is inside a restored building that was once a grocery store and later Plymouth Wallpaper. The renovation took six years, and the result is not a stripped-down crab shack or a nostalgic museum piece. It’s a 168-seat seafood restaurant with a raw bar, a market component, and a second-floor event space called The Plymouth Room.

The menu keeps the Faidley’s connection close without simply rebuilding the Lexington Market stall in the suburbs. There’s Faidley’s crab dip with house-made pretzels, Maryland crab soup, fried oyster Rockefeller, catfish sliders on house-made brioche, and a crab cake served with pickled tomato and celery salad.

Chef Scott Bacon, formerly of Magdalena at The Ivy Hotel, also pushes the restaurant into broader Chesapeake dinner territory, with lobster pasta, BBQ shrimp and grits, Chesapeake chicken milanese, halibut, and a whole fried fish of the day. Maria Bell oversees pastry and beverage. And it’s True Blue certified, Maryland’s designation for restaurants using Maryland crabmeat.

For Baltimore, Faidley’s already meant crab cakes. The Fishmonger’s Daughter is what happens when that legacy gets tables, cocktails, and dinner service.
