Maui’s Best Meals Begin at the Source
Fish named for the person who caught it, dinners served on working farms, and Filipino cooking near the airport define the island’s dining scene.

I’ve learned that eating well on Maui requires looking beyond any single stretch of coastline. The best restaurants in Maui run from Kahului takeout counters and Wailuku bento shops to Upcountry pizza, a seven-course dinner on a Kula farm, and serious sushi along the Wailea coast. Local fish arrives with the name of the person who caught it, Filipino cooking reflects the families who shaped the island, and produce grown in Hawai’i often travels only a few miles before reaching the plate. It is an unusually varied food scene for an island this size, and one that keeps giving me reasons to explore beyond the beach. These are the best Maui restaurants right now.
Joey’s Kitchen at Balai Pata

After two decades cooking at Roy’s Kāʻanapali, chef Joey Macadangdang opened this Kahului restaurant as a more personal account of Filipino food. Pork belly tocino comes in steamed buns with atchara and banana ketchup, while whole fish lands in a sour tamarind broth with long beans, okra, and eggplant. Even the fried rice gets Kona abalone. Finish with halo-halo served in a coconut, assuming the table has left you any room.
Best for: A celebratory Filipino feast near the airport
Kitoko Maui

A food truck may not seem like the likeliest source for one of Maui’s most carefully constructed meals. That is part of Kitoko’s charm. French-trained chef Cole Hinueber applies fine-dining technique to island comfort food, including a loco moco built with crisp sushi rice and a choice of braised Maui beef, local venison, or lobster. Desserts receive just as much thought: cacao sorbet arrives in a hollowed cacao pod, while a financier gets lilikoi sauce, toasted meringue, and Thai basil.
Best for: Fine dining without four walls or a dress code
Komo
$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Opened at Four Seasons Resort Maui in 2025, Komo gives chef Kiyokuni “Kiyo” Ikeda a setting worthy of his precision. He dry-ages tuna, blends the restaurant’s soy sauce, and grates fresh Shizuoka wasabi on sharkskin. Twice-weekly shipments from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market keep the selection unpredictable; the 10-piece Mystery Box turns those deliveries into a compact argument for letting the kitchen decide.
Best for: Serious sushi with an element of surprise
Mama’s Fish House
$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Yes, Mama’s Fish House appears on nearly every Maui restaurant list. It also remains one of the island’s defining meals. The menu identifies locally caught fish by the fisherman who landed it, and chef Perry Bateman treats that daily haul with restraint. Polynesian décor, vintage aloha wear, and a private cove complete the scene. Reserve months ahead, or prepare to build the rest of the trip around whatever time is available.
Best for: The classic Maui splurge that still delivers
Marlow
$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Chef Jeff Scheer built this Upcountry neighborhood restaurant around naturally leavened pizza and ingredients from Maui farms. The funghi al fontina layers local mushrooms with truffle cream, garlic confit, mozzarella, fontina, and Parmesan, while meatballs pair local beef and pork with tomato sugo. House-made pasta rounds out dinner, and breakfast and lunch make Marlow useful well before the pizza oven becomes the main attraction.
Best for: Sourdough pizza after an Upcountry morning
Maui Bees
$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Maui Bees turns dinner into a three-hour introduction to its regenerative Upcountry farm. The evening begins at 4 p.m. with a short tour of the Bee Museum and grounds before chef Katarina Tualemoso serves seven courses shaped by what is growing on the property. The menu changes with the garden, which is the point. Dates are limited, so check the current reservation calendar before planning the drive to Kula.
Best for: A destination dinner rooted in the farm beneath it
nyloS
$$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
At 14 seats, nyloS gives every diner a clear view of chef Jeremy Solyn working in the open kitchen. The six-course prix fixe menu is market driven and deliberately indulgent: a recent version paired yellowfin sashimi and Toyosu bluefin otoro with Kauai prawn, king crab, and lobster, then moved through artichoke with Périgord truffles, lamb chop, halibut, and panna cotta with Kula strawberries. Jeremy and Paulina Solyn run the tiny Paia restaurant themselves, so reservations are required and dietary requests need 48 hours’ notice.
Best for: A long, lavish tasting menu in Paia
The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea
$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Maui’s only Relais & Châteaux property gives its restaurant a rather persuasive backdrop: sunset, ocean, and three neighboring islands in the distance. The current three-course dinner menu draws on Maui farmers, fishers, and artisans without burying the ingredients under unnecessary ceremony. For a longer evening, the hotel also offers tailored multi-course culinary experiences. The setting handles the romance; the kitchen makes sure dinner is not merely scenery.
Best for: A romantic dinner that earns the adjective
Sale Pepe
$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
After they lost their Lahaina restaurant in the 2023 fire, Michele and Qiana Di Bari rebuilt Sale Pepe in a new West Maui home. Michele, a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist, still makes the pastas in house and gives the pizzas a distinct Maui accent. The bianca, for example, uses sausage made with Malama Farms kurobuta pork, while spaghetti neri pairs clams with Calabrian ’nduja. The new address changed; the Di Baris’ sense of place did not.
Best for: Italian cooking with a distinctly Maui pantry
Shikeda Bento Patisserie
$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Chefs Shin Kim and Sean Ikeda combine Japanese bentos with French pastry technique at this small Wailuku shop. Lunch boxes might center on miso pork belly or unagi with ume rice and pickled seaweed, while the pastry case makes restraint difficult. Airy roulades, pavlovas, and Totoro-shaped choux au craquelin have all earned loyal followings. Arrive early; the cutest dessert in the case has no obligation to wait for you.
Best for: A bento lunch with an excellent pastry problem
Takumi
$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Takumi splits its attention between an outdoor lanai for à la carte sushi and a dedicated omakase room where the chefs control the sequence. Omakase is now offered seven days a week, with signature seatings most nights and an earlier, shorter option on Friday and Saturday. Reservations are required for the signature menu, a sensible rule when dinner starts for the entire room at once.
Best for: Omakase in Kāʻanapali without a hotel dining room
Tiffany’s

Sheldon Simeon and Janice Simeon took over this Wailuku institution in 2022, keeping favorites such as kimchi fried rice, honey-walnut shrimp, steak bites, and crispy pork belly while adding their own ideas. The crispy chicken is brined, steamed, double-fried, dusted with sinigang seasoning, and served with calamansi shoyu. Sheldon’s work here earned him a 2025 James Beard Award semifinalist nod. Order churro mochi munchkins for dessert; maturity has limits.
Best for: A loud, generous dinner with a group
Tin Roof
$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM
Sheldon Simeon’s takeout counter near Kahului Airport turns rice and garlic noodles into a base for mochiko chicken, garlic shrimp, pork belly, or poke. The cooking draws from the Filipino food Simeon grew up with and the many plantation cultures that shaped Hawaiʻi. There are a few seats outside, but this is food built to travel—ideally no farther than the rental-car parking lot.
Best for: The first or last meal of a Maui trip
