Beyond the Lobster Roll in Bar Harbor

The best Bar Harbor restaurants make a compelling argument that dinner is the real reason to come to Maine’s coast.

I first came to Bar Harbor expecting the food to follow the usual Maine vacation script: lobster rolls, blueberry pancakes, and perhaps another lobster roll in case the first one failed to communicate the point. Those things remain, and should, but the restaurants around the Village Green and Frenchman Bay have become far more interesting, with French brasserie cooking, Latin American flavors, raw bars, farm pizzas, serious wine lists, and cocktails built for an evening that does not end at sunset. The best restaurants in Bar Harbor also understand their particular assignment: feed hikers coming down from Acadia National Park, give cruise passengers a reason to wander beyond the waterfront, and remind everyone else that Mount Desert Island deserves attention after dark. These are the Bar Harbor restaurants that show just how good the food scene here has become.

Bear Creek Tavern

The people behind Beal’s Lobster Pier opened the roadside spot in 2026, giving it two personalities: Bear Creek Coffee opens at 6 a.m. with fresh-baked goods, then the tavern takes over at dinner with salads, scratch-made pizzas, wings, burgers, and sandwiches. There’s live music regularly, so check the calendar to see who’s playing tonight.

Best for: Coffee before Acadia, pizza after

Brasserie Le Brun

Chef Simon Volante gives Bar Harbor a proper French brasserie, working through classics such as escargots, French onion soup, steak frites, and duck with the confidence to leave them recognizable. The deep-blue dining room and occasional live jazz lend the place some theater, but the cooking remains the reason to book. An extensive wine list and late-night service on select evenings make Le Brun especially useful in a town where kitchens can begin winding down just as dinner ought to be getting interesting.

Best for: French classics and a bottle of wine

Café This Way

Café This Way sits at the end of a narrow lane beside the Village Green, past the point where first-time visitors begin wondering if they have made a wrong turn. They haven’t. Inside the converted cottage, local art surrounds tables crowded with blueberry pancakes, eggs Benedict, breakfast burritos, and house-made corned beef hash. The café currently serves breakfast daily, beginning early enough to fuel a day in Acadia. Strong coffee helps with both the hiking and the parking.

Best for: Breakfast before Acadia

Havana

Havana has been serving Latin American cooking in Bar Harbor since 1997, yet it hardly qualifies as a restaurant coasting on nostalgia. The James Beard Foundation named it a 2025 semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurant, recognition of both its longevity and continued relevance. Maine seafood appears alongside paella, empanadas, and other dishes drawing from Cuban and broader Latin traditions, backed by one of the town’s deepest wine cellars. Even Barack Obama ate here, although reservations remain available to people without Secret Service protection.

Best for: Bar Harbor’s essential reservation

The Loft Raw Bar & Seafood Grill

Climb to the second floor above Main Street and The Loft opens into a seafood restaurant with oysters, crudo, ceviche, and towers held together by both engineering and optimism. The windows look across downtown, but the raw bar gives you reason to turn around. This is a good place to begin with happy-hour oysters and a cocktail, then discover an hour later that scallops and risotto have appeared. Bar Harbor goes quiet early. The Loft gives the evening somewhere else to go.

Best for: Oysters and a late start to dinner

Peekytoe Provisions

Peekytoe Provisions began as part fish market and part restaurant, an arrangement that allowed whatever looked best in the case to become lunch. Owners Cyndi Bridges and Drew Smith have since moved into a larger Main Street building with daily service and a full bar, but the seafood remains the point. The kitchen works with fresh oysters, sustainably sourced fish, and local shellfish, while the market stocks conservas, cheese, charcuterie, and other provisions. It is still a useful stop when someone in the vacation rental volunteers to cook.

Best for: Maine seafood in several forms

Porcelli’s

Eventually, even on the Maine coast, there comes a night when another lobster feels like homework. Porcelli’s is ready with antipasti, pasta, Italian wine, and the promise of a dinner that does not arrive wearing a shell. Part of the Havana Restaurant Group, the restaurant takes a direct approach to classic Italian cooking, favoring recognizable dishes over unnecessary reinvention. The result is the sort of place where the table orders a second bottle and nobody feels obligated to discuss tomorrow’s sunrise reservation.

Best for: Pasta after a week of seafood

Project Social Kitchen & Bar

Project Social’s garden patio is shielded from Main Street by enough greenery to make downtown Bar Harbor feel farther away than it is. The menu is designed for grazing, with small plates, lobster crêpes, oysters, seafood, meats, and cocktails arriving in no particular hurry. That looseness suits a warm evening, when drinks are disappearing quickly and nobody particularly cares which dish was supposed to belong to whom. Sharing is encouraged, at least until the table identifies its favorite plate.

Best for: Cocktails and small plates outside

Siren and Sailor Bar Harbor Maine Best Restaurants

Siren & Sailor

Siren & Sailor opened near the waterfront in 2026 with coastal food, creative cocktails, and a calendar full of reasons not to leave after dinner. Live music, trivia, and karaoke turn the family-run newcomer into something between a restaurant and a neighborhood gathering place. Bartender Caroline Corson builds drinks from classic foundations with coastal influences. Come for dinner, stay for whatever is happening near the bar, and make peace with the possibility that somebody in your party may eventually sing.

Sweet Pea’s Farm Kitchen

The drive to Sweet Pea’s leaves the crowded center of Bar Harbor behind and follows Route 3 toward the edges of Sweet Pea’s Farm and Bar Harbor Cellars Winery. The kitchen works with Maine farmers, fishermen, and producers, building its menu around wood-fired pizzas, salads, shareable dishes, and changing seasonal features. After a day of traffic in Acadia and sidewalks full of cruise passengers, the open setting feels especially generous. The landscape gets your attention first. The pizza makes you glad you came.

Best for: Wood-fired pizza in a Maine farm setting

Table Salt

Table Salt is one of the newer restaurants nudging Bar Harbor beyond lobster pounds and pub menus. The restaurant keeps its public description spare, which leaves the food to introduce itself: a contemporary dinner menu, cocktails, and wine served in a small Main Street space. Reservations are recommended, a sign worth taking seriously during the summer crush. This is a quieter alternative to the harbor-view restaurants, without requiring dinner to become an occasion with its own dress code.

Best for: A contemporary dinner off the tourist circuit

Veranda at Balance Rock Inn

Balance Rock Inn overlooks Frenchman Bay and the Porcupine Islands from the eastern end of a quiet lane near the Shore Path. Its restaurant, the Veranda, pairs those views with contemporary cooking, classic cocktails, a sundeck, and evening music in the Piano Room. Arrive before sunset and take a table outside if the weather cooperates. The bay slowly changes color, drinks appear, and Bar Harbor performs the version of itself that brought everyone here.
