Eric Barton The Adventurist

St. Augustine, Florida, can fill a day with a Spanish fort, Gilded Age hotels, and people willing to explain which buildings are haunted. By dinner, I’m ready to hear from the living. The best restaurants in St. Augustine give them plenty to say, with Peruvian cooking across the Bridge of Lions, a former ice factory serving crab beignets, and Argentine-style grills working beside the San Sebastian River. Elsewhere, local datil peppers turn up in seafood sauces and stuffed burgers, giving very different kitchens something in common. Here are the 12 best St. Augustine restaurants, from a sourdough breakfast to the dinner you plan the weekend around.

Asado Life St. Augustine Best Restaurants

Asado Life

At Asado Life, co-owner Nick Carrera built the Argentine-style grills responsible for much of what hits the plate. Start with provoleta, grilled provolone with chimichurri, before moving to the Asado trio of picanha, chicken thigh, and chorizo with roasted potatoes and vegetables. The San Sebastian River supplies the backdrop, but even the vegetable plate gets its turn over the embers. I’ll choose it for a long waterfront dinner, or there’s always the less ceremonial lunch route through a Cuban sandwich stacked with mojo pork, chorizo, and smoked ham.

Best for Live-fire cooking beside the San Sebastian River

Bar Citra St. Augustine Best Restaurants

At this café, bakery, and wine bar near Fort Mose, housemade sourdough turns up as toast, focaccia sandwiches, and Roman-style pizza sold by the slice. The menu also offers ricotta dumplings in Parmesan broth with salmoriglio and Calabrian chile. Start with a coffee or choose a glass of natural wine, then work out whether you came for breakfast, lunch, or an early supper.

Best for Sourdough, small plates, and a glass of natural wine

Catch 27 St. Augustine Best Restaurants

Catch 27

Catch 27 puts Florida seafood to work in ways that leave plenty of space for the South. A deviled egg comes crowned with a fried oyster and tomato-bacon jam; the Minorcan seafood chowder brings clams, fish, and bacon into a spicy red broth. For the main event, the catch can arrive with sweet potato purée and lemon-caper beurre blanc, or choose grit cakes with collards, datil relish, sherry cream, and your preferred seafood. The downtown restaurant makes a convincing argument for planning the evening around whatever came off the boat.

Best for Florida seafood with Southern and datil-pepper accents

Collage St. Augustine Best Restaurants

Collage

Collage is a good place to let dinner take up the night, preferably with someone who will agree to order a different entrée. The downtown restaurant’s menu moves from escargot in brandy cream over puff pastry to black grouper crusted with Parmesan, brown sugar, and pecans. Lobster ravioli takes the more-is-more approach, adding shrimp, pesto cream, and a Maine lobster tail, while beef tenderloin can go toward peppercorn cream or the house’s tomato-and-berbere sauce. Finish with the Bougainvillea, strawberries with black pepper and Cabernet-vanilla sauce poured over ice cream in a phyllo cup.

Best for An occasion dinner with lobster ravioli and time for dessert

Forgotten Tonic St. Augustine Best Restaurants

Forgotten Tonic

On historic Aviles Street, Forgotten Tonic moves comfortably from crab cake arancini with Old Bay rémoulade to Korean fried chicken bao with kimchi slaw and black garlic-soy honey. Shrimp and grits gets an andouille étouffée, while a coconut curry with fried tofu gives vegetarians an entrée with equal billing. Order a drink, find something to share, and leave room for another course; the menu has enough directions to keep a second round from becoming dinner’s only accomplishment.

Best for Cocktails that lead naturally into dinner

The Ice Plant St. Augustine Best Restaurants

Ice Plant

$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Ice Plant has found a particularly good second career for a 1927 industrial building: cocktails, blue crab beignets, and dinner. The bar takes its ice and housemade mixers seriously, while the kitchen gives datil peppers several assignments, including the rémoulade for those beignets and butter for St. Augustine shrimp over Carolina Gold middlins. Skillet-fried chicken arrives with hoecakes, collards, sawmill gravy, and apricot butter, a fairly complete answer to anyone who came in thinking only about a drink. The expansive factory space adds to the occasion, and a brisket-and-short-rib burger offers a simpler way through it.

Best for A historic factory setting with cocktails and a substantial dinner

La Nouvelle STA St. Augustine Best Restaurants

La Nouvelle

$$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

La Nouvelle gives St. Augustine a French bistro with a wraparound porch, a garden patio, and several reasons to order more bread. Michael Lugo’s restaurant, with chef Matthieu Landillon at the helm, starts with escargots in garlic-parsley butter or onion soup made with veal broth and Comté. Duck confit comes with red wine-braised grapes and duck-fat potatoes; bouillabaisse gathers lobster, fish, shrimp, and mussels around saffron rouille. The Jefferson House setting is ideal for a leisurely night, whether your version involves three courses or, my preference, a burger with Gruyère on a croissant bun.

Best for French bistro classics on a porch or garden patio

Llama Peruvian St. Augustine Best Restaurants

Llama Restaurant

Marcel Vizcarra’s Llama is a small Peruvian restaurant with considerable range, from the coast to the Andes and the Amazon. Start with lime-marinated fish, giant corn, and sweet potato in the ceviche Lima, or chargrilled beef-heart anticuchos with panca-pepper aioli. Patarascha wraps grouper in plantain leaves for cooking over coals, then adds yuca, plantains, hearts of palm, and passion fruit-cilantro sauce; lomo saltado takes the familiar route through stir-fried steak, rice, and potatoes. Save space for the Sacred Valley dessert, which brings cacao mousse, lúcuma, and eucalyptus into the final course.

Best for Peruvian cooking that ranges well beyond ceviche

Lotus Noodle Bar St. Augustine Florida Best Restaurants

Lotus Noodle Bar

Barry Honan trained in some of the country’s best kitchens before coming back home to open Lotus Noodle Bar. His training and deep knowledge of Japanese dishes meet in a seasonal menu that gives the smaller dishes as much thought as the bowls. It’s hard to miss here, but highlights include cucumber sunomono with miso cashews and duck tan tan ramen in a sesame-and-coconut broth with Sichuan spice and Kyoto white miso. Book ahead, consider a seat at the noodle bar, and give the night enough time for starters and dessert.

Best for A carefully planned ramen dinner with a seat at the counter

The Press St. Augustine Best Restaurants

The Press

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

The Press is a useful reminder to eat beyond St. Augustine’s historic district, especially when lunch calls for a burger and a beer. This locally owned gastropub bakes its own bread and puts considerable effort into what goes between it: the Conquistador has a beef patty stuffed with cream cheese and datil peppers, the fiery local chiles, then piled with chorizo, bacon, manchego, and chimichurri. Start with gingered calamari over grilled pineapple, and consider splitting that burger if you intend to finish with warm white chocolate bread pudding.

Best for Datil-stuffed burgers, house-baked bread, and a casual lunch

St. Augustine Fish Camp St. Augustine Best Restaurants

St. Augustine Fish Camp

$$$ | MAP | WEBSITE

St. Augustine Fish Camp puts a broad seafood menu beside the San Sebastian River. Start with oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp, or fried green tomatoes with herbed goat cheese, then decide between shrimp and grits, roast grouper with corn-and-leek succotash, or a whole fried market fish. If I can convince someone at the table, I’m partial to the low boil for two that brings snow crab, shrimp, clams, and andouille into one shared undertaking. The Lincolnville location supplies the water view, while the range of preparations lets everyone reach it by a different route.

Best for A waterfront seafood meal with plenty of choices

Sunday St. Augustine Best Restaurants

Sunday Gathering Table

$$ | MAP | WEBSITE | INSTAGRAM

Sunday Gathering Table is organized around a belief common in my house, thanks to being married to a baker: that good sourdough can carry a substantial part of the day. In Uptown, the bread arrives beneath smoked salmon with cream cheese and pickled onion, or roasted shiitake and oyster mushrooms with pesto, goat cheese, and cured lemon. Lunch can get considerably less restrained with a fried-bologna sandwich dressed in pimento cheese and datil Dijonnaise, while shakshuka keeps breakfast available to anyone running behind. Order something with enough sauce to justify another piece of bread, then consider taking a loaf home.

Best for Breakfast, lunch, and bringing home a loaf of sourdough
