Stormy Monday Is Staying in Miami Beach, Rain or Shine

Stormy Monday arrived as a five-month pop-up, which gave Miami Beach drinkers just enough time to turn a temporary cocktail bar into a permanent habit. Now they can cancel the farewell round.

Stormy Monday will become a permanent Miami Beach fixture when it reopens Aug. 6, following a brief closure for new furnishings, a standing bar counter, a refreshed menu, and weekly programming aimed at locals.

Founded by Miami bar veteran James MacInnes, Stormy Monday opened at 820 Alton Road, the former home of Macchialina, as a seasonal experiment. It quickly found a crowd among South Beach residents, hospitality workers, and cocktail enthusiasts drawn to thoughtful drinks, carefully chosen music, and the increasingly valuable pleasure of a neighborhood bar built for repeat visits.

“When we opened, we wanted to create the kind of neighborhood bar we always wished we had,” MacInnes said in a press release. “It became clear pretty quickly that people wanted Stormy Monday to stick around.”

The reopening will introduce bar food with a Florida streak. Croquetas arrive topped with caviar, Waldorf salad becomes a lettuce wrap, coconut shrimp gets the cocktail treatment, and Old Bay French fries seem engineered to disappear before anyone admits ordering a second round.

The drinks include Mucho Mango, a jasmine-and-bergamot gimlet topped with aromatic mango chutney foam; the Dahlia, made with mezcal, Thai basil, smoked red grape, and bitter bianco; and Sierra Madre, a sparkling grapefruit paloma inspired by aguachile.

Sunset Hour runs from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday through Monday, with $10 signature cocktails, $12 bites, $8 glasses of wine, and $5 beers. During August and September, a $45 Summer Cocktail Omakase pairs three half-sized cocktails with two bites.

Whenever it rains, Stormy Monday will pour $5 Dark & Stormys until the skies clear, turning a passing shower into a happy hour determined by meteorology. South Beach residents can also receive a locals card offering 15 percent off.

Stormy Monday began as a pop-up with an expiration date. After Aug. 6, the only countdown will be the one between the first raindrop and the first $5 cocktail.
