AUTHOR BIO: With a day job that requires constant travel, Maria Rodriguez is likely a regular at your favorite restaurant. She’s reviewed restaurants since 2007 in magazines from Spain to Seattle.
Jorge Corona and Maria Gabriela didn’t arrive in South Florida with plans for seven restaurants. They arrived from Venezuela in 2018, and Corona found work assisting a pizza maker.
He learned the craft, the couple emptied their savings, and by the end of 2019 they had a wood-fired oven inside a food truck called Piacere. Some nights, they kept baking until 3 a.m. It was an unglamorous way to build a restaurant company.
But the couple has turned those late-night baking sessions into something bigger. Piacere Wood Fire Pizza is now open in Boca Raton, taking over a storefront at Yamato Crossing. It’s the seventh location for the company, following restaurants across Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, and Orlando. The expansion is substantial for a business that began on wheels just before a pandemic made restaurant ownership even more unreasonable than usual.
Mortadella and pistachio
The menu centers on more than 30 Neapolitan-style pizzas made with sourdough crust and baked in a wood-fired oven. There’s a margherita; a pepperoni with hot honey and stracciatella; a black truffle and mushrooms with shaved Parmesan; and the burrata-prosciutto that adds arugula, figs, and balsamic glaze.
Piacere also offers its pizzas in a star shape, turning the outer crust into ricotta-filled points. It’s the sort of flourish that sounds destined for social media, though filling the part of the pizza people sometimes abandon is also simply good engineering. Other options include a mortadella and pistachio pie, lasagna, bruschetta, sandwiches, housemade gelato, and dessert pizzas with Nutella or pistachio cream.
Pepperoni and hot honey
Boca Raton has seen this kind of pizza story before. During the pandemic, Gabby and Garett Goodman began making sourdough pies in their backyard and selling them to neighbors through Instagram. How Ya Dough’n has since grown from that suburban pizza project into a multi-location brand.

Stracciatella with cherry tomatoes
The Boca Raton restaurant gives Corona and Gabriela another brick-and-mortar address, but the food-truck origins remain the more compelling part of Piacere. They built the company one late night, one delivery order, and one blistered sourdough crust at a time.Stracciatella with cherry tomatoes
