Mezzo Bakeshop started with a practical problem. With eight Summer Moon locations across the metro, the Tori and Chad Arnold were outgrowing the commissary kitchen that kept up with pastry demand, and doing all that baking behind the scenes started to feel like a missed opportunity.

Then they had an epiphany. “Why don't we just bring it front-facing?” Tori Arnold has said. A family trip to Italy turned that practical idea into something more ambitious. They settled on espresso, sandwiches, and pastries, and a slower way of enjoying them.

Mezzo Bakeshop opened in September in Midtown Oklahoma City, a European-inspired café and bakeshop. It's a breakfast-and-lunch spot, with coffee, tea, cocktails, beer, and wine on the menu, plus zero-proof drinks taken as seriously as the rest.

The menu reads like a European café's, not a bakery with a few extras tacked on. The drinks program takes espresso, cocktails, and zero-proof equally seriously, and a spritz is an easy place to start.

At Mezzo Bakeshop, the bread is baked in-house, the cheese is made in-house, and even the flour is milled in-house. Sandwiches are built on house-made schiacciata, a flatbread in the focaccia family that holds up well under a sandwich. The Scelta Madre stacks prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, and tomato with basil cream. Breakfast runs to ricotta pancakes, a breakfast panini, and avocado toast, while lunch brings soups, salads, sandwiches, and sides, with gluten-friendly bread options for every sandwich.

The space matches the menu's ambitions. The Arnolds took over a restored historic building and spent eight months fitting it out, and the result has a soaring ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows. Come for breakfast and you'll find the same room in a quieter register, with coffee and pastries before the lunch sandwiches take over. The bakery also does double duty as the commercial bakery supplying pastries to Summer Moon, which is how the whole project started in the first place.

It's an easy place to understand once you're sitting in it. The bread is made that morning, from flour milled in-house, and everything else on the menu is built on top of it. Finish with a pignoli cookie, the classic Italian cookie that looks, improbably, a little like an armadillo, and you'll have a fair sense of what Mezzo is aiming for.
