Blind Tiger Asheville Keeps Its Michelin Key
An 1889 house, a pantry that never closes, and a staff that solves problems help the 14-room guest house hold its place on Michelin’s list.

The pantry at Blind Tiger Asheville is stocked with snacks, cold brew, and the makings of a cocktail. Guests can help themselves at any hour, then take their haul into one of the old house’s gathering spaces. It’s the kind of arrangement that could make you forget you’re staying in a hotel, at least until someone else offers to clean your room.
That balance has earned Blind Tiger a Michelin Key for 2026. It’s the guest house’s third consecutive year with the distinction, and it remains the only hotel in Asheville on the list. Seven North Carolina hotels received Keys this year.
General manager Catherine Mitas thinks the honor belongs as much to the staff as it does to the building. “There’s no big luxury machine behind the guest experience,” she told me. “It comes down to a team of people who genuinely care about the house, our guests, and Asheville.”
The house went up in 1889 in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, just north of downtown. When Lark opened it as Blind Tiger in 2023, design firm Elder & Ash filled it largely with vintage, antique, and handmade pieces. There are 14 rooms, among them an artist’s loft at the top of the main house and a two-room cottage standing apart from it. On the main floor, guests can spread out into the shared spaces, perhaps with a book, perhaps with whatever they found in the pantry.
The furniture has had time to acquire character. What matters to Mitas is that guests feel free to use it. “It should feel like you’ve been invited into a really interesting Asheville home and told to make yourself comfortable,” she said.
Michelin gives Keys for the quality of a hotel stay, considering service, design, character, value, and a property’s connection to its surroundings. At Blind Tiger, that last part shows up in the artwork by local makers and the letter in each room from an Asheville resident, offering ideas for what to see and do. Breakfast, coffee, and tea are available at the house. For lunch, dinner, and most of the day in between, Asheville awaits.
Mitas
Mitas moved to Asheville in 2022, returning to the South after growing up in Georgia. Across those very different properties, she learned to pay attention to why people had traveled there. At Blind Tiger, the staff might remember something mentioned over breakfast or have a small surprise waiting after a day out in the city.
“The best service at Blind Tiger often happens quietly,” she said. “You feel taken care of, but you don’t necessarily see all the work happening behind it.”
A third consecutive year with a Michelin Key could be reason to add more flourishes. Mitas would rather get better at the small ones: knowing the city, remembering the guests, and making sure there’s something good in the pantry when they come back.
